I picked up my mustang for the 2008 Extreme Mustang Makeover on Friday morning, (Friday the 13th!) From the BLM holding facility in Pauls Valley, OK.

I was given the number of the horse I was assigned to for the next 100 days, I was trying to find the horse in the holding pens, but could not see him through all the others! Once it was my turn to load up I saw my boy! I was given a bay 3 year old gelding. With no face markings, and very little white on his right hind and front feet.

Once we got home, I unloaded him into the round pen, and got busy. His knee was a little swollen, so I did not do a lot of round penning, but did work on getting up to him.

On day 2 (Saturday) I was able to put a halter on and take it off several times, worked a little on giving to pressure, and desensitizing to the rope, etc.

My camera has finally decided to die, so I have no pictures right now, but my best friend and my Grandmother took some pictures of day one, so I will try to get some uploaded soon!

I drove to Austin, TX on Thursday, and picked her up on Friday morning. I was given a sorrel filly with a star, strip and snip, 2 hind stockings and 2 front half pasterns! She is adorable, and very sweet. I named her Sunny after a horse I recently had in training, and that I absolutely loved. She had to be put down after a freak accident in her paddock. I think my new little girl is going to live up to that name and try just as hard as the first Sunny did!

When we got there, I was looking at all the horses and noticed her in the chutes. She was pretty, but seemed very timid and afraid of everything… but they are wild horses, after all!
When it was my turn to load up, I got the filly. She reared up and hit her head on the roof, but overall did very well on the trailer, once we got moving. You could not reach in and touch her with out her freaking out, however, some of the other horses did not mind being touched, as long as they had a wall between them and you!

Once we got home, I unloaded her at the 80 foot round pen, with my 50 foot round pen inside that. It just made me feel better to have a wall within a wall! : ) Well, of course she went running the other way, and we had to open up the 50 foot pen, and kind of guide her towards the smaller pen. Once she was in, I got to work.

First session consisted of a round pen session, getting control of her feet, and then getting her to face me with 2 eyes. Once she did that, I worked on getting up to her, and getting the first touch! I gave her a good 2 hour break, then came back and reviewed what I had taught her and added leading into the lesson. We could only get one to 2 steps. It was so very slow, but it was a starting point. That day was now over, but I felt we had made a lot of progress, all things considered.

Second Session: Saturday, the 24th, consisted of a review from yesterday’s lesson, then we worked on a little more leading. There was a big horse show going on that day. I took Sunny out and led her around the 50 acre pasture with the broodmare band, and she did great! So then I got a little brave and took her out to where the horse show was going on, there were trailers, kids, dogs, and horses everywhere… and Sunny led around like a pro! We were weaving in and out of trailers and people. She was doing so well, that if I would have started working her earlier, I would have put her in a halter class, but they were already over. But keep watching out for her in the next open show!

I am obviously excited, and cannot wait to pick up my mustangs, and I am counting down the days! I will be leaving on the May 22nd to pick up my Yearling, and will pretty much start training right away.

There will be more updates, as I am going to be keeping you all updated along the training journey with these American mustangs!
